The program has had a significant impact in the 54 locations across Mumbai. A high percentage of children from the Balwadi program are able to access formal education and to continue their education. Children with special educational needs who are not normally integrated or enrolled are given the opportunity to access and integrate into formal education. Children from our first intake are now studying to be engineers and obtaining college degrees. The children have a positive attitude, improved health and are confident in their ability to achieve. Their parents have been impacted and have a positive view of the value of education. This is demonstrated by the percentage of siblings that are subsequently enrolled onto the program.
NLMET has begun working in 5 new children's centres in Bharat Nagar. (A large slum in Bandra East, a suburb of Mumbai)
The overall scenario of this area is rather disturbing. The communities are struggling for their existence while combating realities such as drug abuse, sexual exploitation, prostitution, high involvement in sexual activity and little knowledge of HIV/AIDS, hard labor, long hours of work, and child labor. All these are heightened by the lack of support systems or organizations working in the area. This makes children in this area vulnerable to high risk of abuse and neglect.
